Ornaro

Hidden among the rolling Sabine hills, this medieval village is truly a hidden jewel of Lazio – a place that will leave you speechless. A scenic road winds through cultivated fields, woods, and gentle slopes, offering a journey completely immersed in green landscapes.Ornaro Alto rises around 640 meters above sea level, crowned by its ancient fortress, the village church with its bell tower, and stone houses clinging to the hillside. The history of this land is ancient: once inhabited by the Sabines and crossed by the historic Salt Road (Via del Sale, later known as Via Salaria), it became a vital route of trade and exchange in Roman times. During the Middle Ages, Ornaro developed as a fortified settlement, known as Castrum Hornarii, strategically overlooking the Salaria road.
